How do UV insecticidal lamps work?

During the holiday season, mosquitoes can be a real nuisance that limits the enjoyment of shared relaxation. More and more UV lamps are available on the market, which help control the number of insects in the vicinity, with the help of emitted ultraviolet light. Below we explain the principle of operation of this type of device.

UV insect lamps work on the principle of emitting ultraviolet light, which serves as a lure for many insects - especially for young mosquitoes and flies. At the same time, the level of UV-A light emission is completely safe for humans. Insects are attracted to the trap and then immobilized in various ways. Depending on the type of UV lamp, insects can be:

  • electrocuted (electrocuting UV insect lamps),
  • stuck to a sticky insert (sticky UV insect lamps),
  • sucked into the interior of the device (fan UV insect lamps).

Electrocuting Insect Lamps

This is one of the more effective solutions in the fight against unwanted insects. Insects attracted by UV light hit a grid that is electrified, which shocks the insects. Most devices are secured with an additional outer grid, making them completely safe for humans and pets.

Sticky Insect Lamps

The basic principle of operation is similar to that of other UV lamps - insects are attracted to the lamp by ultraviolet light. However, the method of immobilizing the insect is different. Sticky inserts are used for this purpose, to which insects adhere. This type of solution guarantees greater hygiene of use. The disposal of the insect also occurs without unnecessary noise.

Fan Insect Lamps

In this case, insects are sucked into the interior of the lamp using a special fan. The insects are locked in a mounted container that prevents their escape. This solution also guarantees high hygiene.

Where and When to Use UV Lamps?

It is best to start using UV lamps before the season, as young insects are most susceptible to UV light. It is also advisable for the UV lamp to be turned on in the vicinity of breeding areas, e.g., of mosquitoes, which will help limit the population of emerging insects. Mosquitoes will also not reproduce as intensively.

It is good for UV lamps to be installed in the shade, which will allow for the elimination of insects even during the day. Both daylight and moonlight, as well as other light emitted by humans, can affect the effectiveness of the lamp's operation.
