Wysokoenergetyczne promieniowanie UV-C wyzwala reakcje fotochemiczne. Promieniowanie o długości fali 185-254, 7nm jest absorbowane przez kwasy nukleinowe komórki i prowadzi w zależności od dawki do zabicia lub uszkodzenia bakterii i zarodków grzybni. Dlatego tez promieniowanie UV-C używane jest do celowej likwidacji mikroorganizmów (jak np. bakterie/wirusy, drożdże oraz pleśnie)
Dezynfekcja ozonowa
Ozon (stgr. ὄζον [ódzōn] – pachnący), tritlen (O3) – alotropowa odmiana tlenu składająca się z trójatomowych cząsteczek. Posiada silne własności aseptyczne i toksyczne. Stosowany jest np. przy dezynfekcji wody oraz pełni ważną rolę w pochłanianiu części nadfioletu dochodzącego ze Słońca do Ziemi (patrz dziura ozonowa).
