Facts
  • Anode: zinc
  • Cathode: Manganese dioxide (MnO2)
  • Electrolyte: solution of ammonium chloride or zinc chloride in water
  • Applications: flashlights, toys, clocks, remote controls, electronic games, radios, alarm clocks - generally devices with low power consumption (more or less up to 100mA)
Leclanche cells (which include zinc-carbon batteries) have been in use since the 1860s, and were virtually the only type of battery used until the outbreak of World War II. Giving way to alkaline batteries, however, they remain the batteries that power the largest number of portable devices to this day – this is due to their low cost and general availability. Zinc batteries are the cheapest type of battery, but they have the lowest energy density - they are also characterized by very poor performance in applications requiring high (above 100mA) currents.
