MYTH
People with hearing implants are able to distinguish the sounds of their surroundings, but they will not be able to understand speech.

The effectiveness of hearing implants depends on the individual patient's case. In some cases, they allow speech recognition without lip reading.
MYTH
Hearing implants treat hearing loss.
ACTUALLY
Implants improve the perception of sounds. Turning off the hearing implant will cause the hearing function to return to its original state.
MYTH
The electrodes of the implants are inserted into the brain and require major surgery.
ACTUALLY
Cochlear implant electrodes are inserted into the inner ear. There is no interference with the brain areas. Surgeries are only required for brainstem implants.
