Can you take a power bank on a plane?

The answer is: it depends. If you are planning a vacation and taking a power bank in your luggage, make sure its power is within the range that does not require airline approval.

In this article, we explain how to verify if your device is suitable.

For power banks, two boundary values of nominal energy have been established, which determine how to handle them:

The nominal energy of the power bank does not exceed 100 Wh

Your power bank is small enough that you can easily take it on the plane.

The nominal energy of the power bank is in the range of 100-160 Wh

Taking the power bank on the plane requires the acceptance of the airline!

The nominal energy of the power bank exceeds 160 Wh

Bringing the device on board the plane is prohibited! This also applies when the device does not have a label allowing the determination of the cumulative energy of the device.

Additionally, the device should be turned off during the flight.

How to calculate the cumulative nominal energy of the power bank?

If the power bank does not have the nominal energy stated in Wh (watt-hours), you can calculate it yourself.
Look for information on the label about the capacity (mAh) and the internal voltage of the cell (V) [Note: we are talking about the internal voltage of the cell, not the input (Input) or output (output) voltage].

The capacity given in mAh must be divided by 1000 to obtain the value in Ah. For example, if your power bank has 20,000 mAh, then for calculations assume 20 Ah. Multiply this by the internal voltage of the cell (usually 3.7 V). We get the result 20 Ah * 3.7 V = 74 Wh. This result means that you can take the power bank on the plane without obtaining additional permission (74 Wh < 100 Wh).
Examples of power banks that are correctly labeled and that you can easily take on board the plane are everActive EB-10k (10000 mAh/37Wh) and EB-20k (20000 mAh/74Wh).

Power Bank (powerbank) everActive Energy Bank EB-27Q is our largest power bank that you can easily take with you to the cabin of the plane. Its nominal energy is 99.9 Wh, so it still fits within the 100 Wh limit of airlines!

Its total power is 162.5 W and 140 W allocated to the USB-C port allows even powering laptops. Three USB ports also allow charging up to three devices at once! Additionally, it features a clear display and pass-through technology, which allows simultaneous charging of the power bank and devices connected to the power bank at the same time.
