Facts
  • Anode: zinc
  • Cathode: manganese dioxide (MnO2)
  • Electrolyte: ammonium chloride or zinc chloride solution in water
  • Applications: flashlights, toys, clocks, remote controls, electronic games, radios, alarm clocks - generally devices with low power consumption (approximately up to 100mA)
Leclanché cells (which include zinc-carbon batteries) have been in use since the 1860s and were practically the only type of battery used until the outbreak of World War II. Yielding to alkaline batteries, they still remain the batteries powering the largest number of portable devices today - this is due to their low cost and general availability. Zinc batteries are the cheapest type of battery, however, they have the lowest energy density - they also exhibit very poor performance in applications requiring high (above 100mA) current intensities.
