Why is early diagnosis of hearing in young children important?
2019-09-03
Few parents are aware that early diagnosis of hearing in newborns is extremely important and can affect the overall development of the child. Children with undetected hearing impairments do not acquire cognitive abilities properly. They may be slower to acquire new skills, including proper speech. In addition, developing children with hearing impairments may experience increased stress due to frustration because the child does not understand why they are unable to learn new, simple skills.
A child's hearing can be tested even before the end of the first month of life. In Poland, tests are carried out as part of screening tests (since 2002 thanks to the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity). However, if abnormalities are found, the test should be repeated to finally confirm or exclude them.
If a hearing impairment is diagnosed, it is important to consider supporting the functioning of this sense, for example, with the use of appropriate hearing aids before the age of 6 months.
