Can you take a power bank on a plane?
2019-07-01
Two energy rating limits have been set for power banks, which determine how to handle them:
The rated energy of the power bank does not exceed 100 Wh
Your power bank is small enough that you can easily take it on a plane. The rated energy of the power bank is in the range of 100-160 Wh
Taking a power bank on a plane requires airline approval! The power bank's rated energy exceeds 160 Wh
Bringing the device on board the plane is not allowed! Even if the device does not have a label to determine the accumulated energy of the device. In addition, the device should be turned off during the flight.
How to calculate the cumulative energy rating of a power bank?
If the power bank does not have a rated energy in Wh (watt-hours), you can calculate it yourself.Look for information on the label about the capacity (mAh) and internal voltage (V) of the cell [Note: we are talking about the internal voltage of the cell, not the input voltage or the output voltage].
You have to divide the capacity given in mAh by 1000 to get the Ah value. For example, if your power bank has 20,000 mAh, then use 20 Ah for the calculation. Multiply this by the internal voltage of the cell (usually 3.7 V). The result is 20 Ah * 3.7 V = 74 Wh. This result means that you can take the power bank on the plane without obtaining additional permission (74 Wh < 100 Wh).
Examples of Power Banks that are correctly labeled and that you can easily carry on board a plane are the everActive EB-10k (10000 mAh/37Wh) and EB-20k (20000 mAh/74Wh).
