The higher the capacity of the battery, the better?... Do not necessarily
The relationship between the capacity and the life of a Ni-MH battery
Rechargeable batteries with the highest capacities make the most of the available technologies, containing as much active material as possible in one battery. Therefore, the cost of their production is by far the highest.
Such a heavily strained battery, on the other hand, has one serious drawback - a very limited life.
A typical 2500 mAh AA battery usually lasts 2-4 times less than 2000 mAh cells produced in the same factory.
A 1000 mAh cell can be used up to 2x more times than a 2000 mAh cell. During operation, cells such as AAA 500 mAh or AA 1000 mAh can prove to be nearly 10 times more durable than the strongest, most capacious cells.
The full useful life of such low-capacity batteries easily exceeds 10 years.
Do we really need high capacity?
Even apart from the aspect of excellent battery life of low-capacity batteries, we do not always need as high a capacity as more expensive counterparts offer.
Some devices are not able to use the entire available capacity of rechargeable batteries – in such devices, a battery with a capacity 2 times lower does not have to last significantly shorter.
Devices that have so far worked on batteries – remote controls, clocks, scales, etc. work for many months between battery changes – where the use of typical high-capacity rechargeable batteries is pointless (both for economic and ecological reasons). The use of cheaper rechargeable batteries with low capacities can be an ideal solution to replace disposable batteries in such devices – for the user, an additional benefit will be the fact that Ni-MH rechargeable batteries do not spill out.
All devices where the manufacturer has factory-used rechargeable batteries with much lower capacities, where they are by definition irregularly, often recharged – in particular all solar accessories: rodent repellents, solar lamps, other garden accessories, etc., as well as DECT cordless phones/handsets – it is usually not worth installing too capacious rechargeable batteries in such devices, because they may not be charged properly and can degrade quickly – here it is always the best idea to choose batteries with a similar (preferably slightly higher) capacity than the factory solution.
Summary
As we have already mentioned, rechargeable batteries with relatively low capacities can really have many advantages. In many devices b
